On the show Big Brother, why are the houseguest not suppose to sing or discuss sports?

If they sing a song, even one as ordinary as Happy Birthday, the show has to pay royalties to the firm that owns the song. Not sure why they can't discuss sports, though. BTW, they were talking about American Idol earlier, specifically Kat singing with Meatloaf and Elliott singing with MJ Blige.
