You have been doing so much damage to your lungs that it probably won't recover fully; but you don't want to continue to smoke---that will make your lungs even more damaged and may never recover! You have a slight change if you stop smoking now, to get your lungs healthier! Remember, every time you light a drag you lose a day of living!

Natural Quit Smoking Magic

I seem to recall reading that quitting now will result in 50% improvement in the damage done to your lungs in 5 years. In ten years a 50% improvement from there, same at 15 and 20 years.

In effect, if you were 100% going to die due to correctable damage from your smoking in 20 years, quitting now would reduce the likelihood to about 6%.

So, will they recover? If you are lucky and follow your doctors healthplan to change your life.

I stopped three years ago. It was the best thing I have ever done. I was worried about going back onto the ciggies if I got stressed. I picked a date for stopping and the day before I went outside and had my last ciggie at 11:40pm and then when I had finished it I chucked my other ciggies, lighters and all ashtrays in the bin outside. The next morning was really hard believe me, by dinner time I was quite stressed I thought I needed a ciggie, I got busy cleaned the house did the ironing and shopping, I had my dinner then it hit me I couldn't have a ciggie after dinner, it was this ciggie that I really missed, but I got over it. I haven't touched one since. My lovely mum died of enphysema, she suffered really bad she had a collapsed lung. I knew I had to give up and I did. Try it your lungs will improve loads. GOOD LUCK....from everyone on here I'm sure.

I think that it depends on what damage is already done. I mean, every time you smoke, the risk for getting lung cancer becomes greater. So it would definitely help to STOP smoking. Even if it doesn't fix the damage, at least you'll make it that much better by not making it any worse.

Also, I would check with a doctor, to see what damage is done. If he says there's a chance for recovery, go for it.

Also, yah, I agree with some of the other guys. Careful exercise and healthier living circumstances should improve your chances of recovery.

I smoked for 20 years and quit...I'm sure (and I'm sure that science will support me) that my lungs have recovered a great deal by now (I quit 20 years ago)...but I feel so much healthier not to mention cleaner and richer now.

Absolutely. It's a cliche, but it's true...It's never too late to quit.
You will actually feel better from top to bottom, not just your lungs. They will take longer than other body parts to get healthy, and if you have emphysema, those little air sacs won't recover, but if you get stuck into a healthy lifestyle it will really speed up your recovery.
