A black hole is a celestial body formed when a huge star goes nova and collapses in on itself. The mass of the star is too great to form any other body; it just collapses to a point. After that point is sucks in everything around it, the remnants of the solar system, dust, interstellar gas, even stars. There is a super massive black hole at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy, and it has eaten many stars. Currently for some unknown reason it is dormant. This condition is far from unique.
One theory of how the universe will end is that all the black holes will suck in everything. The remaining black holes will form one huge black hole with all the matter of the entire universe concentrated at one point. Forming the cosmic egg, which will explode creating another Big Bang, and a new universe.
We can never know what is in the center of a black hole because to escape all that gravity any exiting item would have to exceed the speed of light, and even photons (the particle that transmits light) are affected by gravity, and cannot escape a black hole. This is known as the event horizon, past that point no one knows what happens, the laws of physics and nature no longer exist.
People theorize that a black hole may empty into a white hole, somewhere in the universe or in another possible universe. This could be the explanation for Quasars, the strongest energy emitting objects ever known.
Stephen Hawking came up with the concept of black holes, and for a time even he wasn't sure they exist. Now he does know that black holes are real and he talks about them in his book "A Brief History of Time.”

Heh heh, spell check, firstly. Secondly and in answer to your question, science has yet to explain what is inside a black hole, however there are numerous theories. Some believe that black holes are gateways to parallel universes. Others believe that black holes are rifts, or tears, in the time-space continuum, where time and space themselves compress and stretch, and were you to be able to enter one, you might pop out on the other end in an entirely different place, and at an entirely different time. Still others believe that there is, in fact, nothing on the other side of a black hole. They believe that black holes simply compress matter into nothingness and, thus, are the sole exception to the law of the conservation of matter.

You mean a a black hole? Nobody's been inside to see. If a reporter from "Scientific American" did visit one, there's a not-very-fat chance of coming back to report it. The black hole theory predicts that a star of a certain size might collapse into super-dense matter: atomic nucleai that have long been stripped of the surrounding orbiting clouds of electrons, compressed to an infinite point. Its tremendous gravity has the destroyed and super-compressed remains of everything that has crossed its path, including light that has fallen into it.

its maybe nothing as when material falls into a black hole from a companion star, it gets heated to millions of degrees Kelvin and accelerated. The superheated materials emit X-rays, which can be detected by X-ray telescopes such as the orbiting Chandra X-ray Observatory.

impossible to tell. more than likely really condensed matter. perhaps condensed so tighty that some elementary particles are crunched into unrecognizable entities. either that or a wad.
