i have never worked in England but most soft woods turn grey after a few years, i know that cedar and pine turn grey even after treating them.

I owned a house in New Hampshire that I sided with cedar shakes. That's most definitely what you're looking for.
Within 5 years it had faded from fresh looking rough cut red cedar to a light grey, almost silvery depending on the light.
Ahhh...I miss New England!

probably cedar. you can treat it with water protectent but will still turn grey eventually.
