I presume that you are referring to the concept of slavery in BDSM. This has nothing to do this the institution that we fought a four-year war over. No, contradictory as it may seem, "slaves" are who they are because they choose to be, and they can stop being slaves at any time.
Within the context of Dominance and submission (D/s for short), there is an agreed upon power exchange, where someone that is submissive grants someone you is Dominant power over them. This means that the submissive agrees to obey the wishes of the Dominant and serve the Dominant in some way that has been agreed upon.
Why do some people do this? The answers are multiple. Perhaps they live in a world were they are in control of many things and wish to have their private life be where they abdicate power to another, to createe a balance in their life. Others might have some kind of arousal at being told what to do. Still some others enjoy being a bottom in terms of bondage and S/M, and simply put up with a small amount of power exchange. In most cases, there is no psychological harm that occurs, so it's a system that works for some people.
The concept of being a "slave" is a relative term indicating that one has given virtually all power to a Dominant, who in turn is usually referred to has a Master (or Mistress). The term is suggestive that the power exchange is made to the point that a Master "owns" the slave and can do whatever they please. For some people, the concept of being considered the property of another human being is a very arousing one indeed, and not for the faint of heart.
In many relationships, a "contact" is drawn out, which puts into writing what power that a slave surrenders to a Master. On the flip side, the Master is obliged to accept the responsibility of the well-being of the slave. It seems to be a one-sided deal, but in some cases, a Master assumes a lot of responsibility as they are now in charge of another's life as well as their own.
From a legal standpoint, there is no law that enforces this kind of behaviour. A slave (as well as a Master) still retains rights granted under the law, including the right to leave this kind of relationship. There is no actual ownership of a slave that is recognised by any jurisdiction. Instead, it is a form of role-playing that the parties involved take very seriously.
Hope that this helps.
