A couple of things that I see need clarification:

1. The words "sustain" could mean that the human race merely survives in some numbers in some form however strange and horrible to us today. Or it could mean that the human race 100 years from now is something recognizable to us today; perhaps life will be hard, but recognizable at least. Finally it could mean that our quality of life and values are relatively intact.

2. Does he question seek suggestions for actions to bring about a desired result or merely a dispassionate view of what might unfold, that is, what events could lead to human survival in 100 years?

I thought he was talking about all the hatred and strife of the human race. But he won't be able to read all the answers anyway as there are 810 pages so far and 11 days left to answer so what does it matter, he is not going to do anything about it.

We possess the technology which if wrongly used can result in total or at least near total destruction of civilisation and the human race. We have in our midst people who believe that killing others will ensure they enter paradise - they sincerely believe that god gives them the license to kill others. Imagine the combination even though we may try to deny it could happen. In the past we have had suicidal maniacs but not the technology. So the basic question of human survival.

I believe if all the leaders of every country would get together socially a few times a year and get to know each other personally that the world would be a better place to live.

Hawkings is a scientific man, so I would assume he means scientifically. We technically survived the Dark Ages but as human beings we regressed technologically.

I think he's asking what we can do to keep civilization from self destructing.

It would be clearer if he didn't speak through that vocal software.
