No they were not, but they were responsible for a lot of the rocking introductions to TV shows in the mid sixties.

Not really rock goes back farther than the sixties. It is all a matter of opinion as to who were the 'founders' of rock and roll. Some say Elvis and some say Beatles and it goes even farther back than that to some.

Rock and roll began in 1952 as a popular form of music. I believe they were a bit later than that.

Kinda both: the band happened just before the days of "Haight/Ashbury" open park concert music days.
They went in the studio on that album giving them their one hit "Cherokee People", which made a regional hit in Tennessee, but kinda went flat shortly after it's release.
