I never needed a cell phone until now. I just want a basic cell phone. I don't care right now for any exciting features.

1) Who has the best cell phone service?
2) What can I expect to pay?
3) Do I need to pay for the phone itself plus the monthly charge?
4) Am I charged for local calls as well as long distance?
5) Do they have pre-packaged phones that I can buy and use...sort of like buying a calling card?
6) Anything else I should know?

It will all depend on where you live. Not every phone service is available in all areas. And just because a provider is in your area still doesn't mean that they will provide all the services they advertise in your area.

Secondly, the most important thing to know: Don't cell and drive!

Thirdly, go with the pre-paid/pay as you go type of deal. There won't be any surprises when you pay the bill. Otherwise, don't be surprised to find you are paying another 30-40% for taxes and fees on top of the stated phone service rate. (So if the phone service is advertised as $45/month, you will end up paying $60-65 per month with taxes and fees.
