Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

If you build it, they will come!
All kidding aside, if you open a book store, you will be deluged by book company reps, each with books they want you to carry. Your problem will be to keep your stock down to a manageable size, so you'll probably want to specialize a bit. Popular books, of course, because best sellers make money, but you may want to think about handling regional authors in a special section, or history of your area, or whatever you think is noteworthy and special that would bring readers to your book store, rather than to another one.
Check with Writer and Publisher, or Writer's Digest, for lists of major publishers, and write to them for information on their terms of sale, markups etc.
Good luck!
