I've been asking myself the same question. The way he "punches" the ball out instead of just grabbing ahold of it is very dangerous.
Sometimes the technique can be good...like when you want to give your offense a jump. But he's been doing it in situations where the opponent is far more ready to counter than his team is.
But I think part of the reason why the French coach likes him, is because he is eccentric. I mean, I like his playing style to an extent...but sometimes his "punches" risk too much without much of a reward...

Fabien Barthez is a world class goalkeeper but he is the one goalkeeper who tries to show that he's the best.He gets nervous sometimes and therefore does not understand whether to hold or punch the ball.He has done mistakes a lots of times. While he was the goalkeeper at Manchester United,he made terrible mistakes such as he took the ball outside his penalty area and tried to dodge the opponent's strikers and got tackled and gave the opposition an easy tap in goal. This he repeated for three to four times and it resulted in conceding a goal. This is what led to his downfall. Manchester United sold him out to Olympique Marseille as they no longer wanted him because of his folly. One thing of Barthez i have noticed is that he cannot hold the ball properly. That's the reason he tries to punch the ball out rather than holding it.According to me the best goalkeeper for France is Gregory Coupet. And the Best goalkeeper in the world is Petr Cech of Czech Republic. The best goalkeeper for penalty shootouts is Ricardo of Portugal.

My guess is that he's not, but tends to make key mistakes less often than not. But I am still puzzled, how can a goalie be that inconsistant and still be on the national team? France has a pretty hefty population. Can they just not find anyone better?

I would take him as my goalkeeper over, say, you.
And I've got to agree with the comment below that the best goalkeeper for penalty kicks is the Portugal goalkeeper. (But why on earth did he look so *awful* on Schweinsteiger's first goal today . . . he just waved at it and missed!)

yeah. barthez is terrible. the ball has slipped out of his hand at least twice when he's tried to throw it out to fullbacks in this wc alone.
