easiest way in the world is to get both on the internet, and run a program (freeware) known as hamachi. It will "bootstrap " a connection, in other words require no configuration. U can thatn access the shared files on each of the computers in this ad hoc network, and even print around the place. Full tutorial is provided on the website, google hamachi. or just go here

Get a base station router to create a "network", it will connect your computers and allows you to log on to another computer as well as the ability to share your internet service on all connected devices (computer, xbox, playstation) at the same time. Each computer will plug into the ports on the router using Ethernet cable and the main computer is connected to both your modem and the router allowing both internet and file sharing. Belkin and Lynksys are popular brands, a 4 port model will connect up to four devices.

Call the Geek Squad. They came out and networked both home and laptop computers. Very reasonable priced.
