Does your tan wash away if you go tanning and use lotion and take a shower right away?

It doesn't 'wash' away, but what does happen is by showering right away first, you are washing away those top few layers of skin, which mean your tanning won't be near as effective. The best thing to do is: before tanning, shower and us an exfoliant, this will peel away a few more layers, making your tanning more effective and it will last longer. Use a tanning lotion to help bring out the color while tanning, then when you get home, apply a moisturizer. You can buy these at the stores as well, but I just use Cure'l, it has great moisture and is way cheaper. I hope this helps!
