Essentially, a wallaby is any macropod that isn't considered large enough to be a kangaroo and has not been given some other name. There is no fixed dividing line. In general, a wallaby is smaller and has a stockier build than a kangaroo; a wallaroo is any of a few species somewhat intermediate in size between a wallaby and a kangaroo. No species of wallaby weighs more than 25 kilograms. Very small forest-dwelling wallabies are known as pademelons (genus Thylogale) and dorcopsises (genera Dorcopsis and Dorcopsulus). There are also tree kangaroos and quokkas as well. The name wallaby comes from the Eora Aboriginal tribe who were the original inhabitants of the Sydney area. Wallaby young are known as "joeys" as are kangaroo young. There are 65 species of macropods in total.

There is very little difference between a wallaby and a kangaroo other than size. It's rather like comparing a pony to a horse. If you want to get technical, kangaroos have feet that are longer than 10 inches, while wallabies' feet are shorter. Wallabies are sometimes referred to as Lesser Kangaroos. All wallabies and kangaroos are macropods (means big feet).
