I am moving from Boston to Houston next month. I am starting at Rice and have never been to Texas before (crazy, I know). Any pertinent info?

Well, I don't have to worry about dorms, I am going to be a grad student and will be living about a mile from Rice in the Montrose area... so no dorm for me!

Ive lived here all my life and am ready to leave.the first thing you may have a hard time with is the humidity. Its hot . all the time.the other thing is the fact that Houston has never had any zoning laws so the slums are everywhere. If you use crack though it makes it easy to buy it.the second is our lack of public transportation and only having one freeway that runs east to west so its gridlocked most of the time.On the plus side if you need someone to do yard work we have lots of illegals. Its one of the best places to earn $10.00 per hour with a masters degree. And If you decide to move out you"ll make lots of friends that hate it also

Our friend with the last answer is obviously angry with the world, so he's going to be miserable anywhere he goes. My brother went to Rice and my family lives less than a mile from there. Rice is an Ivy League-level school, and consequently, there are a lot of highly driven, super intelligent students there. If you are from Boston and headed to Rice, I assume you have a measure of social stature in your upbringing. This will serve you well at Rice and I think you might be surprised just how liberal certain areas can be. But you need to be prepared for something else. Texas is the deep south and unfortunately, racism persists here more than the northern states. It is an ugly fact, but one you should be aware of. Yes, it is hot and humid here, that is what AC is for. If you have a car, make sure it has AC. I hear that not all vehicles come standard with this--funny! You really can't drive without it. If you are fair-skinned, watch out because the Texas sun will get the best of you. Use sunblock until you are adjusted to it better. If the locals invite you to socialize, I recommend you accept as much as you can. Texans can get offended if you don't make an effort to be friendly. I wouldn't worry too much. Generally, the people in Houston are good-spirited. You will be fine! Good luck and enjoy Rice!

Yes. As stated above, it is hot, and humid. The Rice/West U. (just east of Rice) area is one of the best places in Houston for all sorts of reasons: food, shopping, pretty houses/neighborhoods.
You might be interested in knowing that we're not cowboys.
Houston is a pretty fun place (I would say cool, but that could be misleading). Don't let Dr. Bitter spoil it. I've really gotten to enjoy the Rice campus during my stay here, especially over the summer. Lots of pretty birds and some amazing sunsets.
Enjoy Rice to it's fullest. And pray you don't get put in the Martel "College" (read: Dorm).
As you are aware, Rice is pretty small. You start recognizing people pretty quickly. That being said, I'll probably see you around next year, whoever you are.
If you have any more specific Rice related questions, post them up here and I'd be more than happy to answer them as best I can.

Ha! I just got back from there about an hour ago. It is a fantastic shopping part of Houston, and has nice neighborhoods with nice people. It is a lot like Austin in many ways. Most of the houses are really beautiful and old fahsioned. And if you want some good eatin', try Freebirds or Becks. Good luck in Texas!

Great area. Love living here. On the heat and humidity;you'll learn to live with it or you'll just complain all the time. The fall and winter's are pleasant though. Rice is a beautiful campus that you should love. People tend to be friendly. Houstonians still tend to carry Southern traditions, the good and the bad(bad being some racism like tendencies, good being very easy to talk to strangers)

Rice Village is my absolute favorite place in Houston. You're lucky you get to live there. I live about 20 minutes away, and I always go there to shop because they have the majority of eclectic boutiques in Houston.
BTW I'm in LOVE with Boston. I went there last year for business, and I didn't want to come home. It truly is a walkers paradise.

Everyone already mentioned the weather-you get used to it. Rice University is in a great area of town. The campus is beautiful with large oak trees that shade the campus. Its in an affluent part of the city. It is close to everything, downtown, the medical district and galleria area. There is great shopping and great eating and people are friendly.
