My guess is our tendency to learn by oberving others(latent learning/vicarious learning)...I think the word "spying" is a little bit too intense...it is likely that you are constantly keeping an open eye on your surrounding...keeping track of what is going on.
We learn to identify our feelings with the feelings of the people whom we are oberving...repeat doing the right things...prohibit ourselves from doing the wrong things...all by the works of obersving other models doing what they do.

I do with my kids when we are stuck in traffic and can't go anywhere we watch people and make up stories about their lives. It makes time pass a little quicker and it's so much fun. My boyfriend says it's just awful that we do this, but he's coming around. I'm glad because this is who we are. Storytellers. The bigger the story the better.

The word "spying" implies some sort of trespass or infringement, neither of which (in my opinion) accurately (or fairly) describes people watching (which, unlike spying, occurs openly and in public). I think that the impulse comes from a natural curiosity about others because understanding others helps us better understand ourselves.

Practice. I like to read people, determine as much as I can about them by observations on the way they walk, what they wear, how the talk, what they say, what they do, and who they do it with. Its remarkable what story a person tells about themselves in such a short period of time. And observing these stories, one after another....is better than any movie I've ever see.

Jelousy, hatred, curiousity, love... there are many reasons. It also just so happens to be entertaining watching people carry on with their everyday lives... But at the same time, people watch US too. It's an ongoing cycle.

Humans are social animals and our first impressions are sometimes based on actions or appearances. All animals are aware of their environment or they don't survive. We are animals and are aware of our surroundings for many reasons. I think it goes back partially to the fight or flight theory. Our awareness of the world around us. We are also inquisitive creatures and are continually gathering information as life long learners using our senses. Sight is only one of the senses we use to learn.

it's interesting, we're naturally curious.
Gossips try to live through someone else's life.
We also people watch to make ourselves fit in, to conform; we also learn from watching other people do it first

Because life is interesting. People are interesting. And most of all we just want to know if we are "normal" like everyone else. :)

Because people want to see others who are not themselves and determine what the difference is . . .
