The Stampede is a once a year party. I fly back from New York every year around this time to party big. Remember, what happens at the Stampede stays at the Stampede. If you saw a group of about 30 Asians huddled around the game where you break plates on Sunday evening, then you saw myself and my friends.
On Sunday
1. Watched IAMS Superdogs - Quite Entertaining
2. Bought my dream home tickets
3. Played Poker in the Poker Room
4. Played Black Jack
5. Spent crazy amounts of money playing midway games
Won Stuey, Peter, and Brian from Family Guy (All Jumbo
Size)
Also won a jumbo Bart Simpson, Green Dragon, and a
Yellow Duck
Not all for me, but friends.
6. Smashed about 40 plates to win all these toys
7. Watched Sam Roberts perform
8. Walked through the Round Up Center and checked out the
trade shows.
9. Ate Midway food
10. Off to Chinatown at midnight for late night eats.
11. All in all a great day, and a ton of money spent. Good thing I
won at the Casino
The Stampede is great!!

It is a wonderful time and true it can seem like a rip-off but if you know how to beat the system you can party the whole week for very little.
I don't put much faith in the bars around this time because of all the wannabes. There has not been a true western country honky tonk in this city for at least 20years now. The last was Dustys and it got taken over a few years back. The Wranchman's is ok but ever since they opened it up to the public it does not have the true flavor like it used to.
Cowboys... well,,,, thats another story.. expensive and just a rock bar that caters to the city slicker who does not know what a country bar should be like. These are they guys you want to avoid at stampede time as they rip you off royaly!!!!
To me a country bar is 100% not this 60/40 crap or less!!! (music being played and atmosphere)

I Love the Calgary Stampede!!!
I live in Calgary & always make it down to the Grounds, at least once, during it's 10-Day Run! ( This will be my 15th consecutive year! )
What makes it a Truly Great Experience...is that the entire City gets involved!...You don't have to go to the actual Stampede Grounds to feel the excitement that Stampede brings!...It's City-Wide! You can pick & choose events on/offsite to create your own, unique, experience.
Right from Stampede Displays set up to greet Visitors @ the Airport...to Bars/Restaurants, Retail Shops having their Windows Painted with Country/Western Themes & offering Stampede-Themed specials...Free Stampede Breakfasts Everyday in various City locations...The Media - from Local News Broadcasters to Newspaper Column Writers all-decked-out in their finest Western Wear!...to Fabulous Art Displays, Amusement Rides, Rodeo Events & the super Grandstand Show!
And...the People You'll Meet...is Amazing!...I've personally met so many fantastic people from many different continents!...Whether clinking a beer glass together over-and-over again in a pub, restaurant or a rodeo event!...to conversing at length with someone who only stopped you for directions...I've found the Stampede Spirit is Infectuous!
I never fail to have a Great Time!...I also never fail to have a couple of Rough Mornings @ Work!!!

I love the Stampede. I am from Calgary and am away for a few months so I will miss it and I am totally upset. They have a bunch of new rides this year and I am going to miss out. It is definitly a rip off to go to the bars, but you gotta experience it all, so I suck it up and pay the prices! And yes, people watching can be VERY interesting!
