Check out Brian Eno.
He's considered the Father of electronic/ art rock. He dared to experiment with sounds and added bizarre lyrics, (early to mid 70's).
He was the producer of Talking Heads and U2.
His "pop" albums were ingenious:
"Here come the warm jets"
"Another green world"
"The taking of Tiger Mountain by strategy"
"Before and after science"

Have you heard of Rasputina? Love them, they are amazing.

How about Arab Strap? Spoken word but obscure for sure.

Tori Amos is the more famous. Tool? I'm sure.

Portishead?

Hope that helps.
