I was on Depo Provera for a year. I had no bleeding the first month of the shot, then continuous bleeding the last two. I also gained 25lbs per shot before the doctor deemed that it was unsafe for me.
It's different for everyone though. Be sure to talk to your doctor.
A good/bad side effect of the depo is that I no longer have periods. (I took it four years ago.) If I take a BC pill, I will have a period, but as long as I stay off of BC, I don't have a period, therefore I don't ovulate. Strange, huh?

No. wouldn't want to after what i've seenit do to my friends.
In my opinion this product is not for women of color. Two of my friends had adverse side effects. One lost her hair. The other looked as if she had been in a fire.
The only complaint i know from my caucasion friends who used it is pain & tendernes at injection site.
As per http://www.fwhc.org/birth-control/bcdepo.htm
Advantages :
Private.
Effective after 24 hours.
Does not require regular attention.
Does not interrupt sex play.
Has no estrogen.
May decrease risk for ovarian and uterine cancers.
Women can start Depo Provera 6 weeks after giving birth.
Disadvantages:
Causes loss of bone density and risk of osteoporosis.
Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections, including HIV/AIDS.
Requires injections every 3 months.
Delay of return to fertility.
Irregular bleeding.
Most women experience weight gain
The best way to decide if this is right for you is to do some research. Speak with your doctor re: any concerns you have. get the facts, weigh the pros & cons
The best decision is always an informed decision.

I took it once about 10 years ago. When I got the shot, I had TERRIBLE cramping and bleeding, but then I didn't have a period for three months. I also noticed decreased sex drive. So when it was time to get the next shot, I opted for the pill instead.
They say you'll gain weight on the depo shot too, but I wasn't on it long enough to gain weight.

I gained 20lbs over a 3 year period and didn't realize it was from that. I tried exercising and eating right and I couldn't lose anything and the dr. suggested it might be the depo. No longer on it for 3 months and I'm still trying to lose the weight but it'll come.

It is not good and I seriously think they should stop offering this as a method of birth control. I took it for 4 years. I gained weight, hair loss, haven't had a period in 5 years and been off of it for a year now. I have to go see more doctors to find out why I am not having my period. It messes up your hormones big time and should not be used.

I loved it. I took it for about 10 years. Yes I gained weight. I can't blame the shot for it. I was just eating too much it was may fault. Finally I got my tubes tied. When I got off the shot I didn't lose any weight. I quit eating, lost the weight.

I did. Of course there is the weight gain factor (which they said wouldn't affect me) and loss of libido. I really stopped caring about having sex all the time with my husband. That is a major side affect that I didn't know existed and he reason I got off.

About ten years ago I was on it, and when my family doctor found out, he threw a fit. He told me to get off of it immediately. If that tells you something. I didn't like it at all. Just take the pill.
