Thanksgiving is an American holiday. It celebrates the day that the pilgrims made peace with the native americans and had a big dinner, etc.
Why would anyone in the UK celebrate that?

The UK sort of does celebrate Thanksgiving.
Not on the same scale or for the same reasons but Thanksgiving is a church of England celebration in September/October that is primarily only obseevedbin church services.
It has been speculated that the US/Canadian Thanksgiving was borne out of this with the Pilgrims

Hmmm, let's think about this… This particular group of Pilgrims fled countries such as (England and Holland) due to religious persecution (how many have died for this). Most of them didn't survive the trip on the Mayflower or the harsh winter thereafter. The native Wampanoig's feared them and rightfully so, but a treaty was peacefully reached, and after the first successful harvest, they gave thanks and celebrated together for three days. This is what is celebrated and should be celebrated. Oh and by the way, this probably took place in October, when the Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving. Those in glass houses, just sayin'...

The adults often refer to Thanksgiving as Christmas for the grown-ups. We usually have most of the earthly possessions we need and are more interested in family and friendships.

Wow, okay guys, this was a perfectly valid question and a lot of these answers were super rude. Congratulations for reinforcing the idea that Americans are douche bags. Have fun living up to your stereotypes.

Yes, for having yielded the American colonies and avoided Sunday NFL Football. We celebrate between commercials during the Super Bowel.
