Im not asking who has been the best this year so far. Im saying that when its all said and done who will win based on what he did for his team. My bet is on Travis Hafner as the Indians will surely have a better second half and he is a dominant hitter. Other potential candidates are obviously Ortiz (he scares me everytime he swings), Mauer (sweet stroke reminds me of the last .400 hitter), a few yanks, a few other red sox (Manny), prly guys like dye and teixeira (who should have a great second half). i know im not listing a bunch but they were the first that came to mind.

first of all, i dont think a DH deserves winning the award. being a valuable player doesnt mean doing half the things a baseball player is supposed to do. here is what i belive an MVP in baseball should do: 1) be able to carry an offensein any situation. 2) play solid defense. 3) be able to get on base 4)run the bases well. 5) make smart decisions. 6) be a leader. 7) come from a winning team. Carl Crawford and Grady Sizemore fit 1-6 but not 7 so although i think they deserve the award i dont think they'll get it. vernon wells fits them all but he probably wont get it either. the guy i believe should win the award is derek jeter. he does it all, and if the yanks make the playoffs or at least get very close he should definitly win it. although he didnt hit many HRs so far this season (5) he is on a pace for 102 RBIs and always comes thru in clutch situations (hear that A-rod?). He drives in runs, gets on base, runs the bases well (18 SBs already), scores runs, fields well, is a leader and his team is still in the race despite many injuries. what else does the guy need to do?. put hin on any team and they are automatically a lot better. with all the respect to guys like ortiz, hafner, thome and giambi..a most valuable player is gotta play defense... it was already proven last year that a DH is not likley to win the MVP award (ortiz...). some other candidates are Manny Ramirez who has never finished higher than third in an MVP voting because of his various deficiencies. Paul Konerko? Doesn't run as well or field as well as Jeter. Joe Mauer? i bet that if he finishes the year batting aroung .390 he is got a great shot for the MVP award but dont bet on it. Justin Morneau? if he keeps up his current pace, he could end up with the best numbers in the AL. Right now he has 20 HRs, 65 RBIs, and a .288 average. If it wasn't for a bad April, he probably would be the first half MVP. once he started playing well (and the Twins finally started Liriano) the Twins went on a tear! but experts are likely to say that the twins success has come thanx to liriano although i belive it came thanx to morneau and mouer. but he's not a big name guy and unless he does spectacular in the second half dont bet on him either. so that tells me that Jeter is likely to end up MVP because i do believe yankess will stay in the race and maybe even make it to playoffs (im not a yanks fan but thats how i see it.) unless stupid experts give his teammate a-rod the nod to a possible yanks success story.

Tough to say at this point. The best hitters are on teams that are suppose to win (Thome, Ramirez, Giambi, Dye, Ortiz) or are on teams that have no chance to win (Hafner, Mauer). Two possibilities are (1) if Toronto makes the playoffs then Vernon Wells will have a good chance to win MVP and (2) Carlos Guillen is the unsung hero of the Tigers, who will probably make the playoffs.
I'd vote for Mauer but the way the voters have voted in the past, Carlos Guillen may be the actual choice.

I agree with you on Mauer, but he has his work cut out for him with the division he plays in. Still, if he can help the Twins claw their way over the Indians, Tigers, and White Sox, then I'd say he earned it. (The same argument, btw, can be made for Fransisco Liriano)
Other then that, I'd say the AL MVP could go to Jonathan Papelbon (the lights out closer for the Red Sox), Jason Giambi (who finally seems to remember what kind of player he used to be in Oakland), Jered Weaver (rookie pitching phenom from the Angels), Ortiz, A-Rod, or Troy Glaus, who, if Toronto gets their pitching straightened out in the second half, just might put a scare into the Yankees or Red Sox.

Gotta be Joe Mauer!!!! For a catcher to lead the league in hitting, and still be able to catch effectively, unbelievable. He's a main reason why the twins have been on such a run, and if not for the tigers & white sox, they'd be making a great run for it.

ichiro because he hits for an amazing average scores runs and is one of the best base stealers in baseball. without him i dont think the mariners would win a game

Joe Mauer if he wins the batting title.A catcher has NEVER won the American league batting title. That is NEVER as in NEVER!!
