We have 2 computers hooked up together in a LAN. The two computers both share an cable internet connection. Once in a while the internet just stops working (on both computers). I don't know why this is. I can fix it by disconnecting and reconnecting the cable at the modem.
The problem is, I don't always have access to the modem and the first computer, and so I can't always unplug and replug in the cable.
I've tried unplugging and plugging back in the cable at the back of my computer but that does'nt fix the problem. Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it without access to the modem?

It may be your ISP (your internet service provider) what your doing when you unplug both is called cycling, i believe, to restart your internet.
I had a problem where i lost connect about every four hours or so, it was my modem, i never really lost connection. The modem was old and it got hot and kept resetting it self.
Call the ISP and ask if your disconnecting alot, if not then it might be the modem.

It may be a line problem. Have the cable company come in and check it out. There could be water damage in the joints. Or if they are old cables, then there could wearing out of the cables. Some of the older places have these issues or anywhere where water logging can occur. If they are overhead cables then sagging can occur. In summer the lines expand and this can cause the lines to sag which pulls at the joints causing loose connection. This leads to data loss and bad packets being transmitted. When you disconnect the cable from the modem you are in effect killing the bad packets and restoring th econnection. It goes on till the bad packets build up again.
Take care of it now because the more you wait the worse it wil lbecome. I had that problem and the cable company kept making excuses. They said it was internal and all that bs. Finally , I told them that if they don't fix it I was going to go with another service and voila!!! they found the line problem. :)

try to check what is the modem ip, telnet into that and check if you are able to detect your pcs. if you are able to see your pc then reboot it. that should do the trick. (if you don't know the modem ip, call your isp and ask that info from them, just make sure you are one of the contacts so that they can provide you that info, if not, have that person call your isp)
try doing this as well.
check what is the wan ip of the modem and try pinging that ip. if you got a successful reply. could be an issue on your lan side.
what cables are you disconnecting / reconnecting? the internet cable? the ethernet cable/s? phone cable? power cable?
if that is the internet cable, try replacing it with a new one, and if that does not help. call your isp to run a test to check if you have issues with your inside wiring or walljack.
if that is the ethernet cable / phone cable, try replacing it as well and observe if there are changes. could be an issue with the lan side of the modem. is it still within warranty? if it is call your isp and have them run a test on the modem.
if that is a phone cable, take that out permanently, install a splitter at the walljack, connect the internet cable at one end, and the other end, conect a filter that goes to your phone set.
hope that helps... good luck.

Assuming it's a router or even a gateway (router and modem mix) that some ISPs are including with service nowadays... It may be an easy fix. Get to the router's firmware by typing in 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 and login as the administrator either by default or the password you set. Perform a software reset. Then unplug the power and all cables from the gateway / router for around 30 seconds. When you plug it back in wait for the lights to turn back to the color they were when you unplugged it and see if that fixes it. The only problem is that any settings you have made will be undone. These will need to be reset. Good Luck!

If you got the cable modem from your cable company, then take it back and ask for a different model to replace it with.
If you bought the cable modem, and it's still under warranty, take it back and get a different model
If it isn't still under warranty, go to the manufacturer's web site and see if there is a firmware upgrade that addresses the problem you are having.
Lastly, call the cable modem manufacturer and complain about their unreliable product.
