It's not a gene, but a virus. Therefore it is not hereditary. The virus can be passed on from the mother to the baby though via the bloodstream.
I don't understand the second part of your question. To prevent a pregnancy, the safest way is to take the pill AND have the partner use a condom.

HIV/AIDS can be transmitted to a child during pregnancy. If a pregnancy were to occur, there are drugs that can be used to help limit the chances of transmission, but the risk is still present.

Condom is the most obvious form of contraception. An IUD is a viable option for person that really want to limit their risk of pregnancy (note that this is usually recommended for women who have had one child already).

Today there shouldn't be anybody that doesn't know everything possible about AIDS. Babies can get it from the mother if she has it whiles she's pregnant. You can get it if you come in contact with body fluids from someone with AIDS. An example......if your grandmother has AIDS you won't get it because she's your grandmother, but you could get it if you have an open sore and if for some reason you come into contact with some of her blood. Please, please educate yourself ...you could save your life and the life of any children you may have.
