This has been a sudden onset of pain on the top of my foot about 2 inches down from where the leg meets the foot. I haven't had any injuries & I'm fairly certain that it's not broken (no swelling or bruising) - it is just very painful to move my foot or touch it. Any ideas?

This could be a sign of gout. Three yrs ago I ate shrimp and had a severe attack and the hospital thought I sprained my leg. I was more like a break feeling as far as the pain went. It got so bad I could not put any pressure on it. It took me almost 2 yrs. to figure out it was shrimp. I had to eliminate things from my diet i.e. alcohol, meat, fish and then fine tuned it to shrimp. I can't even clean a shrimp bowl. I am that sensitive. Google it. Good luck!

Get to a doctor in case you need a physiotherapist type person. In the meantime, rub ibuprofen gel onto the area & rest it lots, take anti-inflamatory tablets to help. You should put cold compression onto it if it seems to be inflammed but ibe careful. A sports injury can take ages to heal but you have to rest it. A doctor will be able to recommend any gentle excercise you might need as you could have muscle damage that needs stretched out properly.

If you want to spend several hundred dollars only to be told that it is probably nothing, go to a podiatrist. But first you might want to wait a couple weeks and see if it just goes away by itself.

Any discoloration at all? Could it be a rash or insect bite of some kind?
