It is mostly to ensure that the baby is getting enough fat and iron. The effect of this could be delayed development and weight gain and perhaps malnutrition. A six month old is going to find it difficult to get enough nutrients from solids only, I hope she is giving him vitamin suppliments!

There is very little you can say without it seeming like you are critizing her parenting skills...which never goes over well, even if done with the best intention and love. She may take advice from her GP or other health care provider. You are in a tough spot. Good Luck.

You may not be able to criticize her childrearing without endangering your friendship. You have to decide if it is important enough!!

There are several reasons rice milk is not appropriate for a young baby. First of all, it is not a complete food. Babies are supposed to have a primarily liquid diet for the first year of life; it's only after the first birthday that they are really eating enough solids to sustain them. The World Health Organization recommends continuing to breastfeed for *at least* 2 years. Even if this baby *is* getting more solids than is good for him, he can't absorb the nutrients as well from solids as from human milk. And babies have a very variable diet--they may eat nothing but bananas for 3 days straight, then subsist entirely on rice and broccoli. The milk part of their diet has to provide the real nutrition (again, even into and through toddlerhood). Rice milk is deficient in a number of nutrients--actually *most* vitamins and minerals are missing almost entirely, including vitamin C, which is difficult to get in a baby's diet (as citrus fruit and berries are highly allergenic and not usually given until after the first birthday).

Honestly, it won't hurt anything. I have had to give 2 of mine rice milk due to allergies and it was actually recommended by my pediatrician (who did the same with his daughter). As long as he's eating some baby food he's fine. A pediatrician will say if the baby is gaining weight and growing, no big deal. They will always recommend formula first, but a baby won't die without it. Some babies can't tolerate it. There are plenty of ways to get a baby the nutrients it needs, not just one.
Leave her alone. She won't kill him with rice milk.

The rice milk that's out now is actually fortified with vitamins (some brands).

Do you know her doctor? You could call their office and express your concern and ask if they could talk to her about nutrition when she brings her son in on his next checkup.

I agree with you that rice milk is not nutricious enough. Until the child is 1 year old, most of the nutrition comes from milk or formula. Solids aren't even supposed to be started until the baby is 6 months old. At least she did breastfeed until 6 months.

Babies need iron fortified formula or breastmilk for the first year of life - iron is crucial to baby's development and it is essential that he receives an adequate amount. Some babies need other milk due to allergies, but then their diet should be managed by a dietician to ensure that the iron intake is sufficient.
Refer your friend to http://www.homemade-baby-food-recipes.com/iron-supplements-for-infants.html which explains why iron is so essential and lists iron rich foods that baby can eat.

you could continually attempt. some women can nevertheless arise with milk months after weaning, some won't be able to. If the toddler is into restarting also, then you've a bypass, yet when the toddler received't or won't be able to latch on anymore then you should be out of success. purely provide it a attempt. on the least that's going to provide the pacifier convenience.

There really aren't enough nutrients in rice milk. Is he digesting it ok? I would call her Dr.

jsut let her do as she pleases. its her child afterall... but breastfeeding beyond 2 years is actually best. if you feel so strongly, then get some statistics to show her. but it may be too late to go back now.
