OK, Today's computer systems have to running modes of operation. OPEN LOOP and CLOSED LOOP.

OPEN LOOP is when the computer is running the engine on a pre-programmed set of values until the engine starts to warm up and then it goes into CLOSED loop where all the sensors and rElays and solenoids start to operate for your emissions system. What you want to do is locate all your solenoids such as the ones that control your charcoal canister and your switching solenoids that switch the air pump valves into the engine or into the exhaust.

Disconnect each one of these 2 wire solenoids and using an ohm meter check each one for approx 20 ohms of resistance. If you find one that is SHORTED out, This will be what is causing your computer to fail.

These cars suffer badly with defective ground circuits and I imagine something is earthing through the computer and destroying it. You'll never find the fault just by-pass it.

Make sure your battery cables and terminals are in good clean condition and all the little earths are OK. Now put an additional earth between the neg battery terminal and the car body make sure the connections are good and use heavy 60 amp cable.

Fit a separate earth between the ecu and car body, don't use the existing one as it could be faulty.

Now in the boot, put an extra earth on the fuel pump, 30 amp cable. The live is the heavy pink/black cable and the earth is black. Access is gained to this connector via a round plate in the boot floor.

I've had this problem myself with digital dashes, trans ecu and ecu burning out and this is how I fixed it.

I'm really jealous of you damn aussies (and kiwi's?), that ford still makes fairlanes and falcons over there but not here. Anyway, your problem sounds like a sensor or a bad relay somewhere.

lol! thank you for the laugh today with your little jokes! :) and yes i have.. but for me it is those wonderful distractions in the back seat that scream like they are dying, i turn and look and.. oops.. red light. *sigh* i don't even look anymore, i learned my lesson. i went through an intersection once at a red light when i turned to see what was wrong and everyone narrowly escaped death because we were inches away from being smashed from all sides. God was seriously looking out for us that day.

Could be your ground wire is connected to a power source. maybe your voltage regulator is bad and your alt. is sending voltage spikes to everything including PCM. I would check the ground wires first.
