I've heard bad things about Publish America and I know Lulu is pretty bare bones.

I think if I were PODing, I'd go with iUniverse. They're pretty upfront - and they have an alliance with Barnes & Noble. There was just something about them on A.C. Crispin's blog the other day...

There is no reliable POD service. If you have a worthwhile book, keep looking for an agent or reputable publisher.

Keep away from all "subsidy" or "vanity" publishers. You'll spend a lot of money just to give your work away to friends and relatives.

The tip-off is this: If the company requires you to pay for ANYTHING (i.e., editing costs, manuscript preparation, publicity, etc.), it is not a reputable publisher.

Lulu.com is a well-known, popular service. I don't know how much help they can provide in terms of (a) or (c), but they've a good reputation.

I would caution you against PublishAmerica - they're a known vanity press. Check the story in the last link.

I'm using Publish America. No charge for any of it.
