Im trying to explain how they make cartoons to my neice and so she asked me how many pictures they need to draw for a cartoon. So if anyone has any link to anything movie or tv show, we'd love to see it.

depends on how long the movie is
12 frames per second is the typical rate for an animated cartoon.
for picture and an imformitave lesson visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animation
(this in the same link as in the sources)
For example "The Pagemaster" is 76 minutes long and with it having a length of 76 minutes and with 12 frames per second, it would have a total of 54,720 frames

Ah, a question I can answer matter-of-factly. A movie like Snow White or any hand-drawn cell feature that is of quality is 24 frames per second. This can be slowed down for effect, but you can bet that a major motion picture by Disney is a good 24 frames per second. This means that for a 90 minute feature, you have approximately 129,600 frames/drawings. Some of these can be duplicate frames, if the same motion is repeated, cutting down on all that work, but that's why it takes hundreds of people to produce a feauture length cel animation! Plus, you have to figure in hand painted backgrounds, etc, so it's a lot of work. But it is soooo wonderful!! Your typical Saturday morning cartoon, on the other hand, can be 12 - 15 frames per second, depending on the quality of the work.

Mostly 12 fps (frame per second) but varies to 24 fps for refined actions. The amount of "single frame" animation (24 fps) depends of the budjet of the production. Consequently, feature movies tend to have more single frame action.
Double frame action comes from the fact that even tho the rate of the camera displays 24 frames per second, the actual drawing or cell is displayed in two consecutive frames of the film.
The eye can still be fooled at that pace but detects choppyness for certain actions and paces.
A disney traditional animator once told me that for every blink you do during a feature movie like Fantasia 2000, you miss a week's worth of work! :o :)

Old film used 25 frames a second, so just multiply by the length of the film.
