If you've recently started birth control pills or missed pills in a birth control pack, that could be why. Other reasons could be a sexually transmitted infection, pregnancy, a fissure (tear) in the vaginal tissue due to particularly rough sex, or a change in stress levels or eating habits. In any case, definitely check with your gynecologist--it's really only there that you'll get a certain diagnosis.

are you on birth control? Some pills will cause bleeding in between periods. Did you overexert yourself? If you do weight exercises or heavy lifting, that can cause bleeding also.
Can't think of another explanation. If this is the first time, watch it a few days and see whether it goes away. If it keeps happening, call the dr and ask.

are you on the pill? sometimes if you take birth control you can have "break through" bleeding, where you bleed when you're not on your period.
