Short answer is no. As hot as he has been, he would need to get even hotter as the season goes on.

If Mauer were hitting .430 right now I might say he would have a chance, but he is hitting .386 at this moment.

If he hits .363 he will have the all time record for catchers...Bill Dickey and Mike Piazza both hit .362...

Dickey .36217
Piazza .36151
Though I never have been able to figure out why Dickey is given credit for the record when he only had 472TPA he should have had at least 477(3.1 X 154 games) to qualify for the batting record?

I doubt that Mauer is going to break the record for catchers let alone hit .400 If Joe hits .350 it would be an incredible season for a 23 year old "kid"...

He is a fine player and a good hitter; however, he nor anyone else will beat Ted Williams' average of .406 for one season. It's just next to impossible with the great pitchers he would be facing on a day-to-day basis. I mean no one has even come close to .400 for the season since Williams did it in the 1940's.

Cheers!!

Unlikely. Mauer is very good, but pitching has changed too much since the Ted Williams era.

But in baseball, as Yogi Berra said, "It ain't over 'til it's over."

He needs an MVP-level bat right behind him in the lineup, otherwise he won't get enough decent pitches to hit in the second half of the season.

In other words, no he won't hit .400 this season.

He might get to .395 this season. I think the .400 thing is a record that will never be broken.

i would love it if he did. he's got a beautiful swing with that sweet stroke. i disagree with the catcher logic listed above because hes in the American League and if he had a legitimate shot at it the Twins would let him DH. I do think he will come up short, however just because of the level of play you have to maintain to reach a number like that.

I don't believe so but it would sure be great to see him do it.

Then again, who would have thought Travis Hafner would have 5 grand slams by the All Star Break? You just never know!

Nope, he is a catcher and his legs will prevent him from getting that last hit he needs...He will, however, win the batting title.
