You are quite correct. Trick or Treating is the dumbest thing there is. First because kids don't need that candy, second, if you're going to celebrate a pagan holiday, there are other ways to do it. We indulge our children in too much junk and things that are not good for them. Next Halloween, give your kid a dinner party where you serve his or her friends good food and a nice dessert (something sweet and ghoulish.) Build a haunted house in the back yard or borrow a bunch of campy horror flicks. Keep the kids off the streets.

I know it is really hard to understand, but it is actually quite simple. Kids were trick or treating long before strangers became a real danger in our country. With the liberalization of the American courts in the 60's, punishment was no longer certain for even the worst offenders. Consequently people have learned not to trust each other as much. As for the tradition, it stayed, but most parents take their kids to people they know or to businesses (the mall for example) rather than to complete strangers.

Its not encouraged to take candy from strangers on halloween, parents should be telling their children to only go to people they know and trust.

I never thought of it from that view! But you've got a point, maybe it's all related to the tradition regardless our ethics and norms to "Never Talk To Strangers, or Take Anything From them".
People give this up in return for the joy of Halloween and the fun they experience.

It's called trick or treating and the parents inspect the candy before the child eats it. They don't take it from strangers on the street it's a holiday with parental supervision and the children ask for it from neighbors with lit porches. Get it...

Treats were given at Halloween to placate the spirits. Anyone who lets their kids get candy from strangers should eat all of it themselves. Get candy from people you know, and let the kids have fun while they're still kids..
Have heard about you not george bush...

oh my goodness! i ask myself that very same question every year! how uncanny is that? lol.
i remember growing up i never liked halloween much, for that very reason...i never liked candy too much anyway, but the fact i was going to eat something from someone i had NO CLUE was??? how stupid do you have to be?!
my son is 2 years old, and i don't plan on ever taking him trick or treating. it has no real meaning to me...i think the whole holiday is depressing. :-(
p.s. there is no real way to inspect candy--someone can always inject something through the wrapper...x rays won't pick that up.
