David Soul's character in a TV series from 1989 called "Unsub", maybe?
UNSUB [Unknown Subject] was one of the best of the Stephen J.Cannell Productions that ran on NBC. David Soul played Wesley Grayson, a member of the Justice Department Behavioral Science Lab, an expert FBI forensic team that investigates serial murderers and other unsolved violent crimes; his crew used all the latest methods of scientific and intuitive discovery in order to hunt down the "unknown subjects" that performed that current week's gruesome crime. This show was the spiritual ancestor to CSI and Without A Trace.
