Well let me tell you a story. I was going to a concert once, years ago, and tried to grab a campaign sign. It was when Dick Sweat was campaigning in NH ( I think it was NH), what 18 year old wouldn't be tempted by a Dick Sweat campaign sign? As we were grabbing the sign a state trooper pulled up and said that we better not be stealing that sign. A friend of mine told him that it had fallen down and we were putting it up again. The trooper laughed and told us not to touch anymore of the campaign signs. Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to that question. It likely depends on the state you live in.

Most states have laws that require candidates to remove all campaign posters, pictures, etc, once the election is over, usually within 72 hours. You can notify your local law enforcement or the candidate themselve of the infraction, if all else fails, after 72 hours and the police wont do anything, (not exactly a high priority on their get to list) a good law abiding citizen would make sure his or her neighborhood is clean of all trash thus providing a good example to the kids of today (also a good defense if you get caught)

Yes it is. Campaign signs are posted with the candidates belief that after the election they will collect the signs and use them next time. They have people that work for their campaign that go around and do this. Those signs can run into a lot of bucks, especially for a smaller town election

THE OPPOSITE IS TRUE. iT IS ILLEGAL TO LEAVE A CAMPAIGNE SIGN ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AFTER A CAMPAIGN IS OVER. tHE CANDIDATE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SEEING THAT THEY ARE REMOVED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. OTHERWISE, IT IS CONSIDERED LITTERING. IN SOME PLACES THE CITY WILL ACTUALLY HAVE A SERVICE TO PICK UP THOSE SIGNS AND NOT FINE ANYBODY. BUT NO, IT IS LEGAL SO LONG AS IT IS PUBLIC PROPERTY AND NOT PRIVATE PROPERTY, IN WHICH CASE YOU MAY BE TRESPASSING.

No, generally speaking many places where campaign signs are placed are done so illegally on property the politician does not own. You can take down any of these at any time. The same goes for public property.

I like Arthur W's answer -- you can always trust a paralegal. But, in my state, it's illegal to put the campaign sign along the roadside if it is in the public right-of-way, which many of them are. So, removing it is correcting a civic wrong. Hardly an illegal act.

No it is not. The exceptions for removal of any item of property are: if it is on your own private property, if it is causing a safety hazard for drivers and if you just hate the person that is running!
