I do NOT, NOT mean this in an offensive way. I live in eastern TX now, but lived in Tucson AZ for 10 yrs--and came to really love and appreciate the Hispanic culture. Heck, my first real romantic involvement was with a Hispanic woman, so believe me--I have nothing but love for all people, I mean that.
Simply enough, I have noticed something that I don't understand--at the pool, or even at the lake, Hispanics often don't wear bathing suits like the other people do. I see them swimming all the time with tennis shoes, ballcaps, even blue-jeans on. In fact, some pools in Tucson did have "proper swimming attire only" signs apparently because the pool management saw this as a problem.
I am simply curious--why do they do this? I mean no harm in asking, I think it's no different than (say) asking why rednecks love pickups so much, or why Orientals always end their questions with "no," or why Russians love Vodka so much. Thanks for the tips.

they would prefer to skinny-dip, but they wear the other stuff when Americans are around.

I have never only Hispanics not wearing swimming suits. I live in California, and when I go to the beach, there are people of every ethnicity (not race) that wear bathing suits, some don't, but this is everyone...Black, White, Latino, Asians and so on. Maybe it's just personal choice. I think generalizing is wrong, and justifying it with 'oh no, I do like them' doesn't make it right.
Oh and the whole crossing the border thing someone wrote, really cute. I mean, my and other white American's European ancestors came into ellis Island in third class rat infested ships, when our ancestors came in under those circumstances, I don't mock others.

Well, being a Hispanic (Mexican-American), whose graduated from college and pursuing graduate work, let me answer this for you. Usually the people you see swimming in pools, lakes, and rivers are more than likely recent immigrants or not yet acclimated to the American culture. Since I am a third generation American, I have never swam in attire other than swimming trunks and have not witnessed what you have described except while seeing the Mexican workers who are probably not legal or not involved in American culture. So, I don't believe this is a question that applies in the same way as rednecks love trucks. It is more because they don't care what they wear and so they will just jump in.

Most of these answers are ignorant, if not bullshit (hopefull it's the latter, cause you sound like idiots.)
I don't know if it's characteristic of the Hispanics in Texas and Arizona, because, I am Hispanic, and I live in Miami (in which 90% of the population is Hispanic,) and never have I heard or seen such a thing.
In Hispanic countries, people were bathing suits, unless for some odd reason they just felt like jumping in with their clothes, but that's an isolated event. Maybe you should ask them when you see them in the pool with clothes, cause I want to know now!

I have never noticed this. the Hispanics here in Arizona wear swim suits though.
What gets me is in Florida the (politically correct, cause I don't offend) African Americans don't wear Halloween costumes. WTH? I was freaked out! None of them had costumes. I may be wrong but I thought that was pretty much the point.

Generally speaking, Hispanics tend to be catholics and have larger families. I believe in these hard economic times, perhaps bathing suits don't carry a high priority as other necessary items. I apologize if I have offended anyone. These are just ideas and nothing more.

well i know y Japanese end questions with "no" some times
becuase in Japanese putting "ne?" at the end of a sentence means "right?" im guessing anyone would b nervous speaking a forgien language, and try their best to please the other person, so its possible that saying "right ? right?" a lot would mean insecurity. also in Japan, its not customary to b that strong in voicing opinons or going against the group thought, so its a safeguard in case the other person might disagree.

Well, I know some people who aren't Hispanic (Whites and Blacks), and they swim in T-shirts and shorts. So, I don't think this is something that's limited to Hispanics.

I have noticed this also. The Mexicans at my apartment swim in tank tops and shorts. I don't know why, though, sorry.
