i dont know about swimming, but i do know if you go on a treadmill you only need to go 8-12 laps which is about 2-3 miles. I have been doing that for the past 6 months and i have lost over 50 pounds.Plus i watch what i eat and sometimes i run about 4 laps or 1 mile.

you should swim more than 2 times a week. i'm a swimmer on the swim team and i have been swimming the whole season, so i lost about 5 pounds, which is pretty good. you have to swim at least about a mile each day. which is about about 100 laps i think. i don't remember.

Its actually better to base your exercise on time instead of basing it on how many laps..Set a time-1 hour should be good and gradually increase the time every day or whenever you workout. Also you should stay focused on swimming and don't take rests. And maybe try 3 times a week if you can.

If you are an efficient swimmer then you have to swim longer to burn calories. The harder you have to work at it the more calories you burn. If you can't do very many laps try water walking also. If you walk in the water for 20 minutes you get the same benefit as going for a walk outside for an hour. (Because of the resistance water adds).

Yes you should do two to three laps at least 3 times a week but you would be better off doing it every day.

In order to lose weight by swimming, you need to burn more calories than you are taking in. Swimming burns approximately, 90 - 95 calories per minutes of swimming (for a 123 lb. female). Swimming is a great form of exercise because it is a no-impact exercise, great for your cardio, and a efficient way to burn calories.

you should definitly do it more than twice per week and on top of that its not about the laps its about doing it untill you could barely float your self. you have to push yourself especially if your swiming to the point where you actually start burning fat.
