Yes exactly .... I've always said that we should be like the USA and show our flag anywhere and everywhere to show our patriotism. You are so right about taking it down when we lose .... I mean, aren't we proud to be English ? I think it shows just how limited our thinking extends towards being English and proud of it. Even in failure, we can remain a great nation and respected. Personally I think it has been great seeing so many English flags around .... it's a pity the honeymoon is now over?

Well, every other country does it too. How many Brazilian, Trinidadian or Australian flags do you still see up? It's kind of a sign of acceptance: Okay, we're out, we had fun but we know that it's over. It's not a decline in nationalism or patriotism, it's just what happens once you're knocked out. Whoever wins the cup, their fans will probably keep the flags up two weeks thereafter at most - and then take them down. I'm in Canada, and pretty much everyone is of foreign descent, and with exception to most English people - they've kindly lowered their flags. There's nothing wrong with it.

Well here goes Chris my flag's still up but i'm kind of surprised that their has'nt been a knock on the door, some idiot from the council asking me to take it down. When we were in Europe (Portugal) our local paper had printed a statement on behalf of the council asking us not to hang our flag's out and whatever else we have with the white background and St.George's cross on it. I't s different this time around there have been million's of flag's flying and still are....so it's not because we are "sore loser's" .....I'ts because we don't want to end up paying a fine, although i would think most English people would fight this all the way to the court's.

I fly a St George's Cross from my house 365 days a year...

Extra flags are put up during sports events and, of course, on 23rd April - St George's Day.

I should imagine some people just like to show their support for the country when events are on... Don't see what the problem is with that.

Are you another anti-English bigot with a hatred agenda? There seems to be a lot of that on here, unfortunately...

Because the goverment panic about political correctness, it is ok to have flags up while the world cup is on because we are supporting our national team, however, any other time we fly a flag we get accused of being racist? makes no sense, they crack down on it on st georges day too as it may cause offense to people of other ethnic origins.

I am english and disagree with people being patriotic just because of a crappy football (soccer) tournament, if people want to fly flags they should fly them for the country not for the sports,
