According to Wiki, the quietest sound humans can hear at 2kHz is 0.00002 pascals or a sound power of 10**-12 Watts.which is 0dB. Normal talking at 1m distance is 40-60dBs.

According to Wiki, in acoustics, the sound pressure of a spherical wavefront radiating from a point source decreases by a factor of 1/2 as the distance r \ is doubled, or measured in dB it would decrease by 6.02 dB. The behavior is not inverse-square, but is inverse-proportional.

I f we take the above information and we assume that the level the pop concert is heard at is normal talking volume, we would need to calculate the following:

Assume the pop concert is 5km away, we can calculate the loss by the inverse square law. We just need to work out the power of 2 which fits the ratio of the distances.
5000/1 is approximately 2**12 (4096) so the dB loss over 5km is approx 12*6 dB or 72dB. If we add this to the talking volume of 40-60dB we get 110-130dB which is about the same as a jet at 100m.

Because this assume normal speaking volumes, we could get away with much less and still hear it, it we drop it by 40dB to the minimum hearing level, we would only need 100dB at the concert which is only about the same as inside a discotheque. There will also be a channeling effect from the directionality of the speakers so the sound will be going more in particular directions and it will also be carried on the wind depending on atmospherics and landscape.

So the stage would probably be audible with only 80-100dB SPL which could in fact be belted out by a powerful home hifi system in reality. That such a small amount of sound is in reality needed is not so surprising as on a quiet still night a factory siren can easily be heard from over a mile away and a train whistle for several miles if the conditions are right.

It depends on what is between you and the concert. If there's a forest in that three mile stretch then the sound system will be much more powerful, if it's over a lake then it will be much less powerful.

It's important to say that tinnitus is a symptom and not a disease. Some people will have tinnitus because their Cochlea is damaged. And in a few, it could be caused due to hearing loss. But of course, the most common cause of tinnitus is exposure to loud noises. The noise can be a sudden burst, or it could be a constant banging that hits the ear drum and travels inside.

A good guide you can read about tinnitus and some good natural remedies can be found here: http://tinnitus.toptips.org

It depends on atmospheric conditions and wind direction. Normally speaking, for the music to still be audible at 3-miles, it would have to be at about 80 dBA or about as loud as an old-fashioned vacuum cleaner.

If the concert is in the Hollywood Bowl, you wouldn't need any sound system at all.
