It has good aspects and bad aspects. There are great shows, very creative, as well as great reporting. People being what they are, will seek the trashy instantly gratifying, sensational, make-me-feel better than the rest stuff, so on the whole it's bad. As for its effect on family time, same thing. It can bring families together if they watch together, give opinions, communicate, or if each member has a TV in their room, it will break the family apart. This being a free society, TV should be considered OK because of its beneficial effects, and people should be trusted (!) to make the right choice.

Television can be BOTH bad and damaging society, but yet shows can teach a lesson in different ways. It damages the society physically but helps mentally most of the time.
