There's a train (in fact, it is similar to the subway) from El Prat (name of Barcelona's airport) to Barcelona's downtown. It isn't very expensive at all, although it isn't as cheap as the regular subway lines, and there is enough space to keep your luggage close to you. Also, its frequency is about 30 minutes during the day and at night it also works but with less frequency.

Suburban trains (NOT METRO) of RENFE run between the airport and the city (Barcelona Sants station), at present and at least until 22 July, you needs to transfer to another train at Prat de Llobregat, but its easy and with no problems. The ticket cost is EUR 2,40 and the trip takes between 30 and 45 min.

Consider the AEROBUS, which connects Placa Catalunya to the airport and costs about EUR 3. It's quite fast and you get the advantage of seeing the city. There is plenty of room for luggage.

bus (aerobus) or train (rodalies), the ticket for both of them is around 3 euros.
i've always taken the train (you can buy a T-10 -transport card for 10 trips in zone A- which makes the ticket cheaper and you can keep using it for the forthcoming days in BCN)
but if you arrive at night, better to get the bus (the last train is around 00.00 am).
enjoy!

I took the train, similar to subway or metro. It is easy to use, and it runs a lot throughout the day. It shuts down at night.
