I think it's a check list of items, many previously checked before the killing occurs:
Am I worthless in the eye of society: check
Am I worthless to myself: check
Does another persons life matter at this point: negative
Does my life matter at this point: negative
Would I be better off with 'X' person dead....check
All of two people's life gets funneled down to that singular moment in time, when one decides to take it upon ones self to be the determining God of the other...

Well self defense is obvious... But it can be for revenge, power, over-all hatered, envy... There are so many factors. Some people so low life and messed up feel somehow gratified and pleased by death. it's disgusting but true. They are out there.
