In the old days of football scoring wasn't as easy as it is now. The forward pass did not exist. therefore, most scoring was done when the kicker would kick the ball through the uprights for three points.
Kickoff, Punts, field goals and extra points are all done by kicking. Thus the name football.

we've been calling it football since it was developed in the 1870s, it's engrained in the culture. it's americas favorite sport and there's no way in hell we're going to change the name just to make europeans happy. we call soccer soccer and football football, and we really couldn't care less what everyone else calls it. so if it will make you feel better, you europeans can make up a new name for american football and then YOU GUYS can call it that. as for us, we'll just keep calling it football like we always have.

Because they kick the ball for punts, extra points and after scoring. They were going to call it handball but there is already a game called that.
The Australians also have a game they call football.

Football is called football because the ball is 12 inches or one foot long. It is not named after the thing at the end of your leg.

because nobody here cares about soccer. i think thats pretty obvious considering we couldnt even score our own goal in the world cup lol. if we called soccer "football", we would be just like everybody else. we dont use the metric system either so its obvious we like to stand out. we play by our own rules biotch.
