The first reality show is considered to be "An American Family" which ran for 12 episodes on PBS in 1973. It featured an actual family --a middleaged couple and their 5 kids, and was notable for the on-camera capture of the mother asking for a divorce, and the older son coming out to his parents. Remember, this was 1973, so it was pretty remarkable.
