To me, it seemed as if her reaction was genuine surprise. Too much, pause, and her words did not seem scripted. My guess is that the actor and writer wantedjust that reaction from her. For my money, it blew the top of my head off! I felt more moved by that than anything I've seen on TV in quite some time.

I know that acting well is pretending well. I am used to seing good acting. Which is why I asked this question. The actress' reaction seemed so not like acting, and I have watched her for two seasons.

Will someone please speak to the question I have posed? It doesn't matter what the British version did; it doesn't ask if its acting...I'm just wondering if anyone else had the feeling that there was an improvisational feel to that scene!

its possible. if you listen to the commentary on season 1 dvd the actors say that a lot of the show is improvised. they have a general direction to go in but they don't always go by the script

Nope, it wasn't improvised. In the British version of "The Office", there is a similar scene where the two charactors that the America version's Jim and Pam are based on end up kissing unexpectedly. In the "Christmas Special" of the British version, Dawn, the Pam character, comes back inside of the office after leaving with her fiance to unexpectedly grab the character that Jim is based on, and kiss him on the lips. Many of the scenes in the American version are loosely based on the British version.
