I dont necessarily think that the movie was crap. While the movie did have great visual effects and Bill Nighly, the series did not have the time constraint and was able to stay truer to the story and accomodate character development. This is why I think people thought the series to be better.

Okay, the movie was crap compared (plotwise) to the TV series, which rocked the best bad special effects! I don't know why they couldn't do the same thing with Zaphod's head in the movie as they did on the show--that was one of the things that really bugged me in the movie. I will say that Mos Def was actually a pleasantly surprising Ford Prefect--they could have picked a much worse one.

It was just shorter, so of course there's not going to be as much or as many ideas in it. I think the film did a great job of turning a sprawling series of books into a decent film with a beginning middle and end. You have to do that if you're going to make a 2 hour film.

And with the lines about "that gun won't work on me, I'm already a woman" and "You're going to trust the opinion of a man whose brain is fuelled by lemons" and "that should give him some zest for a while" it was hardly crap...

I liked it, I have it on DVD, and will often be found humming the theme song.

I didn't see the movie. I didn't want to ruin my memory of the original series. The original original radio series on NPRwas even better because it let you use your imagination for the visuals. The moment I saw what they did to Marvin I didn't want to see the movie.

I agree that the movie was stupid. It could have been made so much better since the book is so fun. I don't remember the tv show, but it couldn't be as worthless as the movie.

I do. The film AND the television show were cr*p compared to the original 1980's radio series.
And as we all know it was written as a radio script.

trouble was DNA died well before getting near a final screenplay draughted. this left the production company who were well intentioned enough, to turn it into self-contained monument to some of the best bits from HHGTTG various media incarnatons.
