Becuase of his injury, he did not want to strain himself for the season. Though Pujols is awesome and the homerun derby is great, the Cards need him more to go out their and win the pennant. GO CARDS!!!!!

having spent a few weeks on the DL recently(rib cage injury i believe), he probably feels it is unwise to take so many unncessary extra "big" swings in a homerun contest.
too much risk of aggravating the same injury.
