What do companies who provide "logistical assistance" to other businesses actually do?

Logistics involves the handling of people, resources, and raw materials to make sure products are made and delivered in the most efficient and timely manner.

Why do companies provide assistance to others? Because it's not easy to manage all of these and the best way to learn and improve is to turn to others who have been successful.

Perfect example, Toyota pioneered the JIT system when it comes to automaking. Others looked at them because they were so successful to see exactly how it works and how they could integrate it into their own operations.

I think it has to do with providing assistance in how to get things done and also developing strategy. So, first a company that is providing logistical assistance to a new company location might develop a plan based on what the company's goals are than they would provide suggestions as to how to go about using that strategy....I would think its a lot like consulting if not the same.
