1. Get the right running shoes and wear them in before you run.
2. Increase your distances gradually. You don't have to run more than, say, 20-25 kms at any given time. When you can comfortably run 10-15 kms daily, you are ready. Don't run for 2-3 days before the race
3. Eat a lot of pasta. (Carbohydrates) A BIG portion the night before the race.
4. Go and run! You will 'hit the wall' a few times during the race, but there are few things nicer than finishing your first marathon.
You really get to know yourself, and your limitations. In my first marathon this little old lady passed me like I was running backwards, and for the life of me, I couldn't catch up with her.

Read "Duel in the Sun"...it's a recent book and it will answer many of your questions. You can get it from the public library. I can't remember who wrote it (sorry); but it was fascinating and it will give you a balanced view of the sport. It's about the Boston marathon in the eighties...and it is full of helpful tips.
