If a person gets life in prison, with no possible chance of parole, they tend to cause harm to the correctional staff. plus, doesn't it cost more to house them for life than to give them the death penalty?

Not every murder or rape or grievous act against society should be met with the ultimate penalty.

But society needs to have all the possible tools to build order. The death penalty should always be a possibility whenever immoral death or grievous suffering are inflicted.

Those committing these acts need to know that there are consequences for their actions. Whether it is the pain and suffering they leave with the survivors of their crimes or the consequence of death for themselves.

It is not enough to wish the world was a nicer place, we have to enforce common rules for all. That's how democracy and morality work.

I guess you make a fair point that it does cost more to keep these people in prison for life than it does to deliver the death penalty. However what about the people who are innocent, and sent to prison wrongly?

This happens fairly often, too often. The system gets it wrong and innocent people are convicted of crimes they didn't commit.

Maybe the death sentence needs to be reviewed and only used in such cases where there is 100% proof of guilt.

Yeah, I'm against it. I feel the more you make someone live with something they did, the better. Plus, how many times has the justice system backtracked to find out the person on death row is actually innocent? Also, I don't think its a coincidence that those who can afford the better lawyers usually end up avoiding a death sentence altogether.

"Many that live deserve death. And some die that deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then be not too eager to deal out death in the name of justice, fearing for your own safety. Even the wise cannot see all ends". J.R.R. Tolkein

I think that says it all. Our legal system (ideally) would rather let guilty men go free rather than have one innocent man punished. Since there are so many mistakes made in capital cases, I think that the death penalty is not constitutional because there is too great of a chance for innocents to be executed.

I think it is beautiful, wish I could carry out the sentence on a murderer, and would like to see the death penalty expanded to include that punkass bitchboy who cut off 5 cars today on the freeway so that he could make his exit from the left lane, thereby causing an accident.

A crappy honda civic with a folgers can muffler does not make you a good driver, and should therefore earn your death.

It's wrong to take a life no matter what. Life in prison without the possibility of parole is punishment enough.

I am against the death penalty because I am against murder.
State sanctioned murder is still murder. There are no telling how may innocent people have been on death row, but I suspect there are thousands. Besides, would you want to live next to an executioner?

We don't use it enough. People who repeatedly commit heinous crimes against the innocent go to jail and live better than their victims do, then sometimes get out to go back to their criminal ways before their victims have even recovered. And we taxpayers foot the bill for their housing, three meals a day and recreational activities. Consider countries where punishments are more harsh, then consider their crimes rates. They are much lower than ours because we practically reward our criminals.

I'm for it. It's perfect the way it is because they don't go straight to the chair. There are a lot of appeals and they get to spend time in jail and suffer. Death is an easy way out but it's worse when you sit in jail and THEN die.
