ok guys,
i am trying to do a painting in acrylics of a bunch of tulips. there is about ten on a canvas 16x20. i have never worked in acrylic before but think i would rather use it instead of oil, which i have painted in before. i am not sure of the shading lights and darks that make it look like a real tulip. i know that there is several steps to this. should i paint the tulip in darks first and then add the lights. help

definitely add the darks first and then the lights.

gradate the color across the surface you want to appear round. first determine which direction you want the light to be coming from, and stick to it for every different surface in the painting. if the flower is red, paint the part closest to the light source pink, or a lighter shade of red. paint the part farthest away a darker red.

also, tips on acrylic paint: if you want the best color, don't water it down too much. also be careful- it dries relatively quickly into a plastic, so if you do something you don't like don't wait until the next day to fix it. and don't mix yellow with black it'll come out disgusting. that holds true for every kind of paint.

hope this helped!
