I'm not so sure about ornamental elephants, but the Hindu god Ganesha is often portrayed as having an elephants head. Ganesha is known as the god of luck, of new beginnings and as the opener of doorways. He is commonly seen above doorways for this reason. At least, he is in most Indian immigrants houses.

An elephant represents power, strength, longevity, wisdom, and high standards. This is what greets your guests as they come through the door. Besides that, elephants offer protection.

I was always told that ornamental elephants should face the east. =)

elephants represent your wealth and money flow...they should NEVER face the door as this means money will flow out easily..they should be facing inwards meaning money will come into your life...same with frogs..if you need something guarding your door against negative energies or crime it should be dragons or fu dogs...angels help too if you are that way inclined.
also never buy an elephant with its trunk down...that also represents a loss of finances...trunks always up!!

I have to take a guess, here. So that guests entering the home won't have to see rude elephant butts?

What if there isn't a door?
I hate answering with another question, but you have to admit it's a good point.

Most of what was already said plus the end of the trunks should be pointed up.
