Well, I can't think of an American who WANTS Iraq to be unstable. There's only so much the US can do, though. If the Iraqis really want to fight each other, we don't have enough troops to stop them. Iraq is a country of three different sets of people cobbled together by British in 1921. The Shiites and the Sunnis don't like each other and no one likes the Kurds.

I suppose we could forge some kind of alliance if we put a half a million troops on the ground for ten or fifteen years and picked up the tab. That's not how the war is being fought. Instead the war was declared over when it was just getting started, then declared over several more times. The number of troops has been kept in the 100,000 to 150,000 range playing a kind of insurgent-whack-a-mole where the same towns are taken and retaken while the President and his shills on Fox and talk radio slander anybody who says things aren't going according to plan.

I think the current administration is running out the clock until January 2009 and planning to dump the mess on the next President.

The USA wants the violence to continue between Shiite and Sunni peoples. They also want the oil of Iraq. And despite what one individual says they don't want to bring peace to the region. And no USA is not always right. They are never right.

I'm not sure that it is possible anymore, or ever, for the US to stop the Sunni - Shiite violence. The US removed from power the one man (dictator or not) that was controlling the violence. If anything can happen it will not be brought about by the continued presence of the US military; an international peace keeping force may have a better chance, but not a US dominated one.

The United States would like nothing more to bring peace and democracy to the people of Iraq.

The violence needs to continue to justify the US' continued prescence there. And nothing's going to stop it until Iraq takes control of itself, in a REAL democracy as opposed to the facade that is being put up.
